VMAQ-3 Moon Dogs

Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 3 (VMAQ-3) "Moon Dogs" · USMC · 1992-2018

Commissioned at MCAS Cherry Point on 1 July 1992 from the Marines and aircraft of VMAQ-2 Detachment Zulu, the Moon Dogs flew the EA-6B Prowler under tail code MD for twenty-six years of airborne electronic attack. Their two-faced wolf howling at the moon carried the motto NON VIDERE EST CREDERE — "Not Seeing Is Believing" — the creed of a squadron whose work was measured in the radars that never saw the strike coming. VMAQ-3 jammed for Deny Flight and Deliberate Force over Bosnia, stood Southern and Northern Watch from Saudi Arabia and Incirlik, deployed to Bagram in 2005, and logged more than 3,900 hours over Iraq in 2006-2007 before a last Iraq tour in 2010 and a final Unit Deployment Program rotation to Japan in 2015-2016. The squadron was deactivated on 11 May 2018 as the Marine Corps retired the Prowler, ending the Corps' tactical jamming lineage.
