Established 1 August 1952 as the first unified command in Europe, U.S. European Command consolidated American forces on the continent under a single headquarters as Cold War tensions hardened, moving from Frankfurt to Paris and finally, in 1967, to Patch Barracks in Stuttgart, Germany. Its commander wears two hats — four-star U.S. combatant commander and NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe — overseeing an area of responsibility spanning roughly 51 countries and territories from Greenland to the Caucasus. The headquarters badge sets the massed colors of the U.S. armed services on a four-pointed compass star, the joint-service and all-points symbolism of a command that answers to Washington and Brussels alike.
