"Can Do Easy. VMAQ-2." The snarling panther in Carolina blue marks a chapter the squadron never asked for. As the fallout from the 1991 Tailhook scandal peaked, the Secretary of the Navy ordered anything remotely controversial scrubbed — and in 1993 the "Playboys," bunny and all, were directed to change their name and logo. After several proposals were rejected, they settled on "Panthers," borrowing the new NFL Carolina Panthers mark with the team's permission (the squadron would later become today's "Death Jesters"). The Marines complied on paper — and kept flying Playboy bunnies on the jets and painting bunny-head tail codes anyway.
