VMAT(AW)-202 Double Eagles

Marine Attack Training Squadron (All Weather) 202 "Double Eagles" · USMC · 1968-1986

Established at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina on 15 January 1968, VMAT(AW)-202 was the Marine Corps' schoolhouse for the Grumman A-6 Intruder — the fleet replacement squadron that turned every East Coast Marine pilot and bombardier/navigator into an all-weather attack crew. Flying A-6A and later A-6E Intruders alongside the bulbous-nosed TC-4C Academe radar trainer under the tail code KC, the Double Eagles spent eighteen years teaching Marines to find a target at night, in weather, on instruments alone. The crest carries the twin-headed eagle over a lamp of learning flanked by an olive branch and a sword — knowledge in the service of the strike. The squadron was disestablished on 30 September 1986, its training mission handed to the Navy's VA-128.
