Jesters — VF-4 / FLT-42

Unidentified USN fighter squadron, "Jesters" (submitter attributes to VF-4B, redesignated VF-42) · USN · 1947-1948

A hand-chain-stitched jacket patch of the type made off-base by local tailors: a grinning jester in a red-and-tan checkered cap and ruff, his ears rendered as a gunner's wing and a crosshair sight ring, with "JESTERS" arced above and "VF-4 / FLT-42" stitched below. The submitter, who acquired it unidentified, reads those markings as the brief window in which Fighting Squadron 4B — itself redesignated from Bombing Fighting Squadron 75 on 15 November 1946 — became Fighting Squadron 42 on 1 September 1948, a moment when squadron numbers changed faster than the embroidery on a flight jacket could keep up. No "Jesters" insignia was ever approved for that lineage, whose official device was the Green Pawn, so this appears to be crew-made heraldry: the unofficial name aircrew actually used, sewn on by hand and worn until the wool wore thin. It survives as a reminder that a squadron's real identity was often the one it stitched for itself.
