Not a unit insignia but a gag patch, this wool-felt disc pairs the bar-room boast "I'M A LOVER NOT A FIGHTER" with a leering, stubbled old salt in a soft utility cover, hands cupped coyly to his cheeks. The slogan entered wide circulation through Lazy Lester's 1958 Excello single and The Kinks' 1964 cover, and by the Vietnam years it was stock humor on souvenir jackets, Zippos, and back-alley embroidery stalls outside bases in Japan, Okinawa, and Southeast Asia. The joke works by inversion: the Corps sells itself as America's premier fighting force, so a Marine claiming otherwise is claiming nothing of the kind. Pieces like this were never authorized for the uniform — they lived on tour jackets, footlockers, and barracks walls, the private counter-culture of men who did the fighting anyway.
