This is an aircraft-type patch rather than a squadron insignia — a head-on portrait of the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, wings swept forward and twin tails rising above a desert ridgeline, with no unit device or motto to tie it to a single command. First flown at Calverton, New York on 21 December 1970, the Tomcat reached the fleet in 1974 with VF-1 Wolfpack and VF-2 Bounty Hunters, pairing variable-sweep wings with the AWG-9 radar and AIM-54 Phoenix to guard the carrier battle group at ranges no other fighter could match. Patches like this one were sold and traded across the Tomcat community for three decades, worn by maintainers, aircrew, and enthusiasts alike. The type was formally retired at NAS Oceana on 22 September 2006, with the last Navy Tomcat flight — a VF-31 F-14D — ferried to Long Island on 4 October.
